Jwala Devi temple is also known as Jwala Ji temple. It is located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh and it is about 55 kilometers from the larger town of Dharamsala.
The Jwala Devi Temple is one of the utmost religious importance to the followers of Hinduism. It is one of the 51 Shaktipitha and Hindus believe that a visit to Jwala Devi temple in Kangra leads to end of their struggle and commencement of happy days.Temple of Eternal Flame-Jwala Ji Temple
When translated, Jwalamukhi means 'flaming mouth'. This shrine is regarded as  a Maha Shaktipeetham. It is believed that this is where Sati's tongue fell. The temple is dedicated to the Devi Jwalamukhi.


"Jawala Ji" is name of Hindu Goddess in Hinduism. She is said to resides as an eternal flame since time infinity near a place called Kangra in Lower himalayas, India. The mystical and astonishing fact about this flame is that it is burning since time immemorials.
What may leave you in diamay here is the eternal flame that is burning in the premises of the temple for hundred of years without any fuel. The flame burns flawless and in blue colour. It is burning continously since first date of its known history. We don't have any knowledge of its source. Some says it could be reserve of natural gas but same could not be validated.

The legend associated with this temple is that Sati - granddaughter of Brahma and wife of Shiva -immolated herself to punish her father for not accepting her husband


The mythology boasts about the Jwala Devi temple connection with Goddess Sati. Father of Sati, Prajapati Daksh once organized a huge gathering in a Yagya. Except Lord Shiva, everyone was invited to attend the Yagya. This act of Prajapati Daksh offended Goddess Sati; she was so agitated that she decided to jump into the fire that was set in Hawan Kund.  Seeing Sati on fire, Lord Shiva got stirred with emotions. In his rage at loosing his wife, Shiva grabbed his wife’s body and furiously kept moving forth and danced with her burned corpse on his shoulders, causing massive destructions as he proceeded. Lord Shiva b.ecame so furious that he carried Sati’s burnt body and moved around the three worlds.

The gods could not foresee a calamity approaching them. So they assembled before Lord Vishnu and asked him to do something to control anger of Shiva. Thus, to stop the destructions, Lord Vishnu flicked his Sudarshan Chakra, and this made Sati’s dead body cut into pieces. There were 51 pieces which fell on the earth’s surface. And wherever the body parts landed, those places are hailed as Shaktipitha. Jwala Devi temple one of the form of Maa Durga is believed to be the place where Sati’s mouth fell.
Here the goddess is manifested like tiny flames that burn through the fissures in the age old rock.
There must surely be some other phenomena and science that is working behind Jwala Ji eternal flame but that can be indication of glory of our ancestors.
