The Battle of Siwana was
fought between the forces of Sultan Alauddin Khilji led by his general Malik
Kamaluddin and forces of King SutalaDeva (Satal Dev) of Marwar at Siwana Fort.
The Battle was fought in 1308.
Backgound
After the Siege of Chittor
Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi, made preparations to siege the Siwana
fort which was under the control of Sutal Dev king of Marwar. Sultan ordered
his general Malik Kamaluddin to attack the king of Marwar and siege the Siwana
fort. With the orders from sultan Malik Kamaluddin marched towards Marwar and besieged
the Siwana fort.
Battle
Marwar king Sutal dev made
his preparations to defend his fort from the Sultan’s forces. Both the forces
displayed equal strength in the battle. Army led by Sutal Dev mounted a heroic
defence, but after a fierce battle the Marwari army was defeated by the Sultan
army. King Satal Dev was captured. Finally, the Siwana fort was fell to forces
led by Malik Kamaluddin of in 1308.
After the Battle
King Satal Dev was captured submitted
to Sultan Alauddin Khilji. Later he was executed along with all Hindu priests
by Sultan.
Later, in the period 1318-20,
Luntiga Chauhan violently assaulted the fort of Siwana and slaughtered its
Muslim troops. No Sultan of Delhi ever tried to recover this fort after this
assault.
To commemorate this ancient
event (Battle of Siwana) an annual fair called the Kalyan Singh Ka Mela is
still held within the walls of the fort in the month of Shravana (July-Aug).
