What was the reason for Brahmin's being vegetarians? Why they do not eat meat unlike other caste's?What made them to remain forever as vegetarian's?This article is based on some historical scripts and also the book called "Religion And Society" written by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
In ancient Indian society, castes like Brahmins, kshatriyas and Sudrasa were involved in performing Yagna's and Yaga's. In performing a Yagna, a Brahmin plays a key role in chanting mantras and doing the process of Yagna. The role of Kshatriyas was to provide monetary help in performing Yagna's. At the end of any Yagna performed, animal sacrifice has to be done in order to please the God. That work has to be done by Sudra's. After sacrificing the animal, they have to cook the meat and serve the meat to other caste people including Brahmin's and Kshatriya's. For this purpose only three castes were involved in performing Yagna's in ancient Indian society. There was no superior caste or upper caste, the people of all castes were concerned only with their respective work until entrance of Buddhism.
And the time came when Buddhism entered India. They preached that to attain Moksha or to please God, there is no need of killing innocent animals. We can do that by simply closing our eyes and do meditation. This preaching's of Buddhism attracted many Hindus and many started converting in to Buddhism. The king's were in a dilemma. They wanted to save their religion at any cost. For this purpose they also decided not to eat meat or any kind of Non-vegetarian food. But other castes in hindu religion disagreed with that point. The people said that "We are not ready to change for that reason. We don't want Buddhism, we will remain as Hindus only, and we won't giveup on eating meat. If you people want to quit, then you go ahead and quit non-veg. "The kings asked Sudra's and Brahmin's to do so at least. The Sudras denied that because their job is to cut animals, cook them and eat them. This was their job from ages,so they said we can't suddenly change and not eat meat.
The Kings also can't follow the vegetarian rule as they have to fight in wars. They need lot of strength. They believed that,if they stop eating meat they would loose bravery to wage wars. This would be a threat to kingdoms. For this purpose they also didn't want to quit meat. They all requested Brahmin's to do so for saving our Dharma or Religon. They readily agreed for saving the endangered hinduism at that time.
Brahmin's mentally prepared themselves to hate Non-veg,they developed a way to create a feeling of disgustness against Non-veg in order to permanently giveup Non-veg.They started hating meat. But what if one generation would follow this system and the coming generations wouldn't do so?For this purpose they started practising Madi. Madi means process of purifying Mind and Body.Again another thought striked them. What if in coming generations,a Brahmin boy does friendship with other caste boys and due to their influence brahmin boy started eating non-veg? For this purpose they started practising
Untouchability. The Brahmin's used to brainwash their children that if you touch meat, you will be reincarnated into lower caste's and you will have to bear huge sin.Brahmin's started to live in a specific area within a village called Agrahaar, that means place where people of high value lived.
All this practises were done only to save Hinduism and there was no intention of dividing people with caste. With the mutual understanding of all the caste's, the Brahmin's were given higher position because they gave up meat for the sake of Dharma.
Later Vyshyas also joined Brahmins and they also gaveup Non-veg.For this purpose they were also given higher position in castes.Whatever the reason may be,Buddhism didn't get a chance to spread across India. But on the other hand Hinduism started to be in a more strong position.

ReplyDeletePlease, it is a lie that Brahmins were eating meat. It is not mentioned anywhere that Brahmins ate non vegetarian. Maybe some did, but one who truly followed their dharma, they didn't.
