Untold stories of Mahabharata
Mahabharata is an ancient historical
work written in Sanskrit by Krishna-Dvaipayana ( aka Veda Vyasa).Mahabharata is
known as the 5th Veda, because it portraits all the things present in today’s
society, good and bad. Mahabharata was written 5000 years ago and it has 1 lakh
shlokas written in 2 chandassus. It is so scientific that we feel astonished
that something like that could have been written 5000 or more years before now.
In Mahabharata , each and every part is
connected to one another and veda vyasa doesn’t leave any scope to us to
question anything. Besides the narration of the whole kurukshetra and fates of
kauravas and pandavas , it also contains philosophical and devotional things in
it. This book teaches us about the life, Karma, Dharma and also about God.
There are some hidden and untold stories
of Mahabharata which you were unaware of and which nobody ever told you before.
So, here we are going to tell you about these hidden and untold stories of
Mahabharata.
1. Arjuna as an eunuch
In
Indralok, Arjuna was propositioned by Apsara Urvashi. But Arjuna addressed her
as ‘mother’. Urvashi was annoyed with the rejection and cursed him that he
would become a eunuch. When Indra came to know about the curse, he told Arjuna
that could serve him as a boon during the one year stay in hiding and after
spending that period he would regain his masculinity.
This proved to be significant in the war
of Kurukshetra. After spending 12 years in forest, pandavas spent the 13th year of exile in cognito, in the court of king Virat. Arjuna made use of the curse and lived as a eunuch named Brihannala.
2. Five Golden Arrows
When Kaurawas
were losing the battle of Mahabharata, Duryodhana approached Bhisma one night
and accused him of not fighting the Mahabharata war to his full strength
because of his affection for Pandavas.
Bhisma greatly angered, immediately picked up 5 golden arrows and chanted mantras declaring tomorrow he will kill 5 pandavas with the 5 golden arrows. Duryodhana not having faith in his words asked Bhisma to give custody of 5 golden arrows saying that he will keep them and will return them next morning.
3. Birth of Dhronacharya
The birth of
Dronacharya, the Guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata, is very
interesting. It would not be wrong to say that Dronacharya is the first test
tube baby in the world.
Rishi Bharadhwaj
and Apsara Krithaji were his parents. One evening when rishi bharadhwaj was
getting ready for his prayer he saw a very beautiful Apsara bathing in the
river and overpowered by that moment he involuntarily emitted his semen. He
stored that semen in a pot and stored that pot in a dark place. After some
period of time, a baby was born out of that pot who was Dronacharya.
Dronam' means
pot and 'Dronar' is one who was born from the pot.
4. Sahadeva ate his father’s brain, literally!
When Pandu, the
father of the Pandavas, was about to die, he wished for his sons to partake of
his brain so that they inherit his wisdom and knowledge. Only Sahadeva paid
heed, though it is said that with the first bite of his father’s brain, he
gained knowledge of all that had happened in the universe. With the second he
gained knowledge of the present happenings, and with the third he came to know
of all that would occur in the future.
5. The sacrifice of Iravan
Iravan, the son
of Arjun and naga princess Uloopi, sacrificed himself to goddess Kali to ensure
the victory of his father and his team in the Kurukshetra war. He however, had
a last wish – He wanted to marry a girl before he died. Now, getting a girl who
knew her husband would die in few days was a tricky task. So, Lord Krishna took
the form of Mohini, married Iravan and even wept like a widow after her husband
died.
