Battle of Khatoli was fought
between the Rajput army of Mewar led by Rana Sanga (Maharana Sangram Singh) and
army of Sultanate of Delhi led by Ibrahim Lodi. The battle was fought near the
village of Khatoli on the borders of Haravati (Haraoti) in 1518 A.D.
Backgound
Sikander Lodi, born Nizam
Khan, was the Sultan of Delhi from 1489 to 1517. On his death in 1517 AD, his
son Ibrahim Lodi succeeded him. By this time Rana Sanga extended his kingdom to
western Utter Pradesh and threatened to attack sultan. Soon Sultan Ibrahim Lodi
ascended the throne, he was engaged in putting down the revolts of his nobles.
When the news of Rana Sanga’s threats reached him, he prepared an army and
marched against Mewar. The Rana Sanga advanced to fight him.
Battle
The Rajput army and Sultanate
army met near the village of Khatoli on the borders of Haravati (Haraoti). A
fierce battle was fought for 5 hours. The army of Sultanate could not stand the
destructive attack of the Rajputs and it gave way and fled, followed by the
Sultan himself. In this battle, the Rana Sanga lost an arm by a sword cut, and
an arrow made him lame for life.
After the Battle
One of Lodi prince was head prisoner
by Rana Sanga. Later the prince was released on payment of a ransom. The
resources of Sultan Ibrahim Lodi were severely damaged by this battle with Rajputs.
Later Sultan recovered and made his preparations to attack Mewar and take
revenge on Rana Sanga. Sultan appeared again 1519 and Battle of Dholpur.
