Background
Sikander Lodi, born Nizam Khan, was the Sultan of Delhi from 1489 to 1517. On his death in 1517 AD, his son Ibrahim Lodi succeeded him. By this time Rana Sanga extended his kingdom to western Utter Pradesh and threatened to attack sultan. Soon Sultan Ibrahim Lodi ascended the throne, he was engaged in putting down the revolts of his nobles. When the news of Rana Sanga’s threats reached him, he prepared an army and fought battle of Khatoli in 1518 A.D. Sultan was defeated in this battle and one of the Sultan’s prince was head prisoner by Rana Sanga. Later the prince was released on payment of a ransom.
To avenge this defeat Sultan Lodi made great preparations to attack Mewar. The army of Rana Sanga was stretched because of continuous wars. Ibrahim Lodi taking this situation as an advantage appeared again in 1519 A.D at Dholpur.
Battle
Rana Sanga prepared his army by the news of Sultan’s appearance and advanced towards them. Both the armies met at Dholpur.
The battle was started with a cavalry charge from the Rajputs which was personally lead by Rana Sanga, his cavalry advanced into the Sultans army, and in a short period the Rajput army got upper hand and the Sultan's army was scattered. The Rajputs drove the Sultans army up to Bayana.
Sultans army was well prepared with 30,000 horseman but defeated in the hands of Rajput army who were very less in number. It is said that Hussain Khan a general of sultan Lodi teased his fellow nobles from Delhi, "It is a hundred pities that 30,000 horsemen should have been defeated by so few Hindus." after the battle.
