Vishunugupta was the last and lesser known ruler of Gupta dynasty. The great Gupta empire which was founded by Sri Gupta I and ruled by great kings like Chandragupta I, Samudragupta, Chandragupta II, Kumaragupta I etc. He ruled between 540 - 550 A.D. He succeeded his father Kumaragupta III and he was the grandson of Narasimhagupta. Very less information is known about him.
A clay sealing was discovered in Nalanda during the excavations of 1927 - 28, which mentions that Vishnugupta was the son of Kumaragupta III and grandson of Narasimhagupta. Some gold coins have been found at Kalighat hoard on which the name Vishnu was written vertically on the obverse and the title Chandraditya was written on the reverse. A great kingdom whose name is inseparable from the Indian history was ended with the reign of Vishnugupta. Gupta era was considered to be the " Golden age of Indian history ".
